I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that You have done; I ponder the works of Your hands.
Psalm 143:5
I don’t know how many of you are thinking of New Year’s Resolutions and such yet. I tend to get all introspective and retrospective at the end of the year, and seem to think the New Year will fix all of that.
This year, I’ve been reading the Psalms and also Deuteronomy 8 and have been encouraged to remember the works of the Lord in my life. Like the Israelites in Deuteronomy 8, I feel like God is bringing me out of a wilderness of sorts into the promised land, and it is easy for me to forget that it is not my talents or power or strength but it is God’s blessing that have enabled me to do what I’ve done.
My one consistent New Year’s tradition is to start the Bible on January 1st and read nothing else (except things like email, street signs, and textbooks, obviously) until I finish the Bible. This time of focus and entertainment-fasting has been extremely beneficial. As I do this in the coming weeks, I hope to blog about it…it is a very meaningful part of my spiritual growth.
Normally, I come up with several New Year’s Resolutions, but I’m thinking about post-poning that and doing Groundhog Day resolutions. One of my favorite bloggers, David Seah has been blogging about doing these over the past year and I like the idea…especially being able to delay resolving until after the holidays and being able to constantly review them.
So, what are your New Year’s practices? Do you make resolutions? What are yours? And…what should mine be?
