Quiet Times

This spring, I read a great book entitled “Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life” which identifies the importance of discipline in our spiritual walks and then details (very detailed!) how to be disciplined.

One of the ideas that struck me was  his Bible reading plan. He reads a few chapters a day in five different sections, starting with Genesis 1, Joshua 1, Job 1, Isaiah 1, and Matthew 1.

I start each year by reading through the Bible all the way—before reading any other books. But, once I’m finished…then what? So I grabbed this plan and started it. I’ve really enjoyed the variety it gets me. I’m reading in five different time periods, five different literary types. It gives me variety and I start seeing and appreciating connections I hadn’t noticed.

So my current devotions consist of some Psalms/Proverbs, the Bible reading, some study now and then, and some reading in Daily Light and in Valley of Vision.

I recently acquired a book by leadership expert John Maxwell titled “The 21 Most Important Minutes in a Leader’s Day” which is a 21-week devotional working through a number of important Biblical leaders and identifying principles and application. I think I’ll start working on that next.
