Collection of photos I've taken, with commentary. Copying to your computer is stealing, and that would make you a thief. Don't be evil.

Serenity.
I took this picture one early morning in late fall 2008. Found it today while rummaging through my archives. Reminded me of good times.

I am finding it difficult to keep shooting without actual projects. 2008 was a strong year for me with over 20,000 images kept. 2009 has less than 5,000. to date. Without real, client-driven projects, I find it difficult/impossible to keep shooting. When it was my job, I also did a lot of personal work, and my skills kept improving. Now, I do little client work or personal work, and my skills have/are/will atrophy.

It might be easier to get back into the groove if I could find my battery charger.

This previous weekend, my friend Tim and I traveled to Missouri at the behest of our friend Stephani to surprise our friend Chris (Stephani’s husband) for his birthday. We drove in Tim’s 2000 Mustang convertible, got great tans/burns, and had an awesome time in Columbia.

Photo Of The Day: Reflections

29th January 2008

Reflections.

Today’s photo came as I was walking to the office after lunch. The wind was blowing, the sun was shining, and I looked at my Bodum french press and realized what a great photo was sitting here, in my hand. I set it on the sidewalk, and began experimenting with composition.

The second, third and fourth time you photograph something will produce more refined composition than the first time. These may or may not be better photographs. You will never know, however, unless you make the second, third and fourth photographs.”
(LensWork Issue #50, anonymous.)

Lately I’ve been trying to really work my photographs—and I’m loving the results. This photo is a classic example (as is yesterday’s) of this strategy. It took three decent photographs before I finally arrived at this pick.

Photo of the Day: Abstract

28th January 2008

I am really finding satisfaction in shooting very abstract, expressive art.

Nikon D200_50.0mm f/1.8D_1/200sec@f/3.2, ISO100.

Early this afternoon, I was standing behind the Admin building waiting for someone and I started looking around me. I am making it a habit to go pretty much everywhere with my camera, and this has led to keeping my head on a swivel looking for potential photographs. In this case, I was struck by the symmetry and repetition of the three metal stair-rails. Look further, I realized that with the contrast provided by the varying colors and textures was powerful. Then, I thought to myself, “Ah, here is the perfect place to utilize the “stacking perspective” provided by the telephoto lens on my camera!”

It took several photographs to finally arrive at this composition that I liked best.

I post-processed it in Lightroom, using my near-complete workflow process. Pulling ideas from many sources (including Apple, Microsoft, Adobe’s Terry White, Scott Kelby’s 7-point-system, and others), this workflow seems to be working well for me. Look for a post on it in the near future.

Micah, the musician.

22nd December 2007

It is amazing what a difference clothing makes for portraits.

I did a portrait session with Micah today, and quite frankly, he rocked! This was my best photo shoot ever. Micah was a total natural, was quick to look great, and was very receptive to poses.

Micah was a natural. His smile was great, right away! I got up on top of a ladder and shot down, using the whitish snow as a backdrop. Interesting perspective, didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. I tried getting down in the snow, really liked it, but man, it was cold! I ended up putting him against this old green barn, and loved the results! The contrast with the red shirt and green barn worked perfectly! I like the serious expression Micah has in this pose, with the blurred instrument adding context.

I took the time to make sure he got dressed appropriately, and it made a big difference. Not only did he look better, but I think the clothing helped him mentally play the part. I’m going to have to make sure that I review clothing choices with clients in the future.
